General Questions About Training

What type of self defense training should I expect during class?

Streetwise Martial Arts specializes in real-world, practical self defense: armed attacker defense, unarmed attacker scenarios, striking skills, ground fighting, and takedowns. Everything is geared toward defending yourself in unavoidable violent confrontations while prioritizing prevention and emotional control. We teach a balanced Plan A (awareness, de-escalation, respect to avoid trouble) and Plan B (decisive physical techniques when needed). Classes are challenging yet supportive, with modifications for all fitness levels.

Do I need any prior experience to join?

Absolutely not. We welcome complete beginners, experienced martial artists, men, women, and fitness levels. Currently ages 14 and up. Coach Mike tailors guidance so everyone progresses safely and effectively. Many of our strongest students started with zero background.

What’s the community and atmosphere like at Streetwise?

Community is a top priority. We expect everyone to maintain a peaceful, respectful mindset—in and out of the studio. We’re all training partners on the same team—no egos, no judgment. The focus is mutual growth, safety, and real progress in a supportive NYC environment.
